If proponents of the war on drugs are having trouble finding drug abusers, maybe they should try checking Twitter.
The network sees a massive number of drug-related tweets every day, ranging from jokes to news stories, with at least a few actual attempted drug deals thrown in for good measure.
The folks at Fractl have created a real-time visualization tool, measuring just how many times Twitter users mention drugs every day. The project began on Dec. 28, 2013, and continues through today.
The tool reveals some pretty interesting things about Twitter users and their thoughts on drug use. For example, marijuana is the most talked about drug on site, with nearly twice as many mentions as alcohol since tracking began. While the average mentions of marijuana are increasing every day leading up to 4/20, the immense amount of weed-related discussion could coincide with recent studies about changing opinions on drug use.
