4K tablets on the horizon

Japan4KtabletWe’re at a point where we’re going to 4K all the things. We are seeing 4K televisions, laptops and with smartphone manufacturers also toying with the idea of making 2K and 4K smartphones it would only be a matter of time before we’d see tablets make the same leap. If Japan Display, Inc. is any indicator, tablets may be making that leap sooner rather than later. The company just announced a 10.1 inch display with a resolution of 3840 x 2160. That’s a whopping 438 ppi for a tablet — something that hasn’t been done on a tablet yet. Currently the GalaxyPRO 8.4 holds the most pixels per inch with 359.

JDI is even using an RGB pixel matrix meaning that they aren’t using trickery techniques to achieve this resolution. The screen boasts a 1100:1 contrast ratio and allows for a 160-degree viewing angle. It also boasts a peak brightness of 400 nits. Power consumption and battery life are a concern but it looks like the company has that handled as well.

Of course, as of right now, there is no word on which companies are lining up to get their hands on these displays but we can guess that there will be many.
