Will Staples, of all companies, make 3D printing mainstream?

Will Staples, of all companies, make 3D printing mainstream?

Above: Staples' in-store 3D printing promotion

Could an office supply store bring 3D printing to middle America? Staples surely thinks it can, and this week jump-started a trial program offering 3D printing services in New York and Los Angeles, Businessweek reports.

While Staples already retails 3D printers, the $1,000+ price tag is surely holding back widespread adoption. Yet, mainstream interest in 3D printing appears to be growing across the globe. Staples believes 3D printing could extend its copy and print services, which compete with offerings like FedEx Office.

Staples hopes to out-do companies already offering in-store 3D printing services, like Makerbot, by taking a “soup to nuts” approach with customer lessons, says Staples VP of business services Damien Leigh. 3D printing still packs a steep learning curve for the average person, but Staples appears up for the challenge to educate the public.

Above all else, Staples’ size and existing business relationships give it a fighting chance of making 3D printing mainstream. It all depends on these pilot programs in NY and LA.

HTC One (M8) in Glamour Red said to be heading to Verizon

HTC_One_Max_Back_HTC_Logo_02_TA

At Verizon, the HTC One (M8) is only available in Gunmental Gray and Glacial Silver. Along with these colors, Verizon gained exclusivity from HTC by releasing the One (M8) on the same day it was announced. And it now looks like Verizon will be getting another exclusive. This time, another color.

On Twitter, @evleaks let the cat out of the bag by saying the HTC One (M8) on Verizon will soon be available in Glamour Red. When? We do not know. But we have heard about other red variants of the One (M8). The Stealth Red variant was recently delayed, so will Glamour Red hit a speed bump as well? Cannot be sure just yet.

Feds try hacker in wrong state, conviction tossed

“Weev” the wily hacker walks.

Weev, whose real name is Andrew Auernheimer, was convicted on multiple federal counts related to a hacking spree in which he stole 114,000 email addresses from AT&T in 2012. Although he lived in Bill Clinton’s home state of Arkansas, he was tried in federal court in Newark, N.J.

The U.S. Court of Appeals in Philadelphia said Friday that Auernheimer’s crimes, violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and identity theft, had no connection to the Garden State and thus tossed the conviction, according to Bloomberg.

It’s a curious turn of events, given that he could have passed the data to Chinese intelligence — but he gave it to Gawker.

Auernheimer was sentenced to 41 months in prison in 2012. Since that time, he’s been chilling his heels at the Allenwood Federal “Club Fed” Correctional Complex in White Deer, Penn. Auernheimer’s attorney,Tor Ekeland, said his client was being held in solitary confinement almost 24 hours a day.

After the federal ruling yesterday morning, the lawyer is trying to get Auernheimer released, saying he has been treated badly in prison, according to press accounts.

Here’s what Auernheimer did, according to the federal complaint: He breached AT&T’s servers and stole the email addresses of more than 100,000 customers who were accessing the Internet through their iPads.

Auernheimer apparently passed the email addresses and other information he stole to Gawker.

Federal investigators managed to get Auenheimer’s friend and accomplice Daniel Spitler to testify against him in exchange for a reduced sentence. Spitler told the federal judge during the trial how the two men wrote computer code to generate iPad users’ ID numbers.

Auenheimer argued they were doing it for fun and didn’t consider it theft.

Spitler pleaded guilty and testified against Auernheimer. He described how he carried out his attack by writing computer code to generate iPad identification numbers. Auernheimer told jurors that the information was public and that he never considered what he did as theft.

At the time of the hacking spree, Auernheimer was in Arkansas and Spitler in San Francisco. The AT&T servers they broke into were in Dallas and Atlanta respectively.

The U.S. Attorney’s office that oversaw the prosecution said they were considering their options now that the conviction has been overturned.

Auernheimer was represented by the Electronic Frontier Foundation during his appeal to the original charges.

The crisis in Ukraine escalated Saturday, as pro-Russian masked gunmen seized a police station and a security-services building in the city of Sloviansk, near the Russian border.

Kyiv Post, a Ukrainian English-language news organization, said the takeover appeared to be a Russian military operation similar to the invasion of Crimea last month, involving men in fatigues carrying Kalashnikov assault rifles. Gunmen reportedly established checkpoints outside the city of 125,000, and appeared to be searching vehicles for weapons, Kyiv Post reported.

The Grand Unified Theory Of Female Pain

The pain of women turns them into kittens and rabbits and sunsets and sordid red satin goddesses, pales them and bloodies them and starves them, delivers them to death camps and sends locks of their hair to the stars. Men put them on trains and under them. Violence turns them celestial. Age turns them old. We can’t look away. We can’t stop imagining new ways for them to hurt.

The Heartbleed security flaw was fixed in the newest version of OpenSSL, but you should still change your passwords on all of the sites affected by the bug.

If you’re still not sure which sites were affected, we have the perfect chart for you, created by the “digital forensic specialists” at LWG Consulting. Every site from Facebook and Google to Pinterest and Flickr was affected. Luckily, many financial institutions were not.

As we wrote yesterday, “Heartbleed arose inside a version of open-source OpenSSL cryptographic software. Information sitting inside the memory of a server should be encrypted, but a little bit of data could be pulled out under an attack. The vulnerability affected widely used infrastructure from cloud providers like Heroku and Amazon Web Services as well as networking hardware from vendors like Cisco and Juniper.”

Most recently, a report emerged alleging that the U.S. National Security Agency had known about Heartbleed for more than two years, and even exploited it. The NSA later denied the allegations.

Stephen Colbert, I have a T-bone to pick with you.

Your deliberate French pronunciation of our surname has caused a great deal of trouble in my life since your first appearance on The Daily Show. I'm Team Bert, not Team Bear. Col-bert (me) versus Col-bear (you) might seem like the silliest French-versus-American word battle since Freedom Fries.

But you see, it matters. The hard "T" ends our name with a diction kick instead of a snooty whimper

Marvel's Superheroes are Super Selfie-Absorbed

Superheroes don't have time for such idle pursuits like the perfect selfie — there's a city that needs saving!

An artist known as Billy Butcher imagined what would happen if various Marvel comic book heroes were all as selfie-absorbed as everyone else

"I thought it was interesting to explore such a modern phenomenon, the selfie, clashing with a vintage concept like the design of characters from the '60s," Butcher told Mashable

Indeed, the vintage style clashes with the modern phenomenon of smartphones to create something very much like the pop art movement of the '50s and '60s. And that's a good thing: Andy Warhol would probably be a big fan of the selfie. Read more...
