Michelle Obama Defends Internet Freedom in China Speech

U.S. first lady Michelle Obama defended the importance of free speech and Internet freedom in a talk in China on Saturday.

Obama spoke at the Stanford Center at Peking University in Beijing, as part of a goodwill tour in the country. In what could be seen as a criticism of China's tight grip on the Internet through its infamous "Great Firewall," which censors western websites such as Facebook, Twitter and human-rights blogs, Obama underlined the value of freedom of expression online,

"It is so important for information and ideas to flow freely over the Internet and through the media," she said, according to TIME. "Because that’s how we discover the truth, that’s how we learn what’s really happening in our communities, in our country and our world." Read more...

Treatings is the Tinder of the business world

Treatings is the Tinder of the business world

Have you ever wanted to talk to someone for career advice but didn’t know to whom you should reach out?

Treatings, a New York City-based startup, allows you to get professional advice from total strangers over a cup of coffee. Two years after its launch, the service has acquired users in five major cities in the U.S. and is now looking for investment to develop its mobile app.

Here’s how it works: Say you are a startup founder who’s looking to meet with an Android app developer. You sign up for the service by logging in with your LinkedIn profile, selecting the topics that interest you (in this case probably startups, programming, etc.), and choosing your favorite coffee shops. And just like how you update your Facebook status, you can write, “I’m looking to meet with an Android app developer.” The message will go public, and anyone on the site can respond to you.

Or, if you do not have a specific kind of person in mind, you can simply let Treatings choose the a match for you. The algorithm matches up people by their interests, their skills, and their favorite coffee shops.

The idea is that LinkedIn or other social networks only create interactions among professionals online, and it’s rare for people to meet in person. In contrast, Treatings creates a platform where people have the common knowledge that it’s perfectly okay to reach out to anyone on the site and treat them to a cup of coffee.

“There’s trust you established offline that you couldn’t establish online,” said Paul Osetinsky, co-founder and chief technology officer of Treatings, in an interview with VentureBeat.

“We think that’s super important.”

If the online-to-offline idea sounds familiar, you might be one of the millions that have experienced the modern way of romance — the dating apps. In fact, many features of Treatings were borrowed from these sites.

For instance, one can express interest in someone else by clicking “let’s meet” on his or her profile. The message will be sent to the other person through Treatings and also via email. If that person happens to be interested in you, congratulations! You are matched up with someone who’s happy to go on a coffee “date” with you.

But one question that bothers many users of dating apps is how to get the most attractive person to respond to their likes, pokes, winks, etc. Similarly, why would any senior company executives on Treatings spend their valuable time talking to inexperienced students seeking career advice?

“The most attractive person gets a lot of messages, but they are still on the dating sites,” said Osetinsky.

“All we are trying to do is to lower the barriers of reaching out so that mutual interests can surface.”

The lower barrier has certainly attracted some open-minded professionals. David Namdar, a trader at a New York City-based hedge fund and an angel investor, has successfully met around seven people through Treatings. For him, the level of experience does not impact his willingness to meet people.

“There are tons of values that you can learn in every single meeting,” said Namdar. “Even if it’s someone like a student who doesn’t have much experience, and they want to have a quick conversation, there’re still other things that are interesting to me to know their experiences.”

Since signing up, Namdar had met a student who reached out to him for advice in the finance industry, a person working in real estate who’s interested in learning his international experience, and a banking professional who wanted to know more about the hedge fund world.

As an investor interested in startups, Namdar also successfully reached out to an expert who was able to explain the differences among various programming languages, a like-minded professional working in the financial industry, and Hayden Williams, the CEO and co-founder of Treatings.

“I don’t actually talk to people on LinkedIn or try to interact with them or set up meetings,” said Namdar.

“Treatings gets you access to people you don’t know, but [you then] have an easy way to communicate with people offline.”

Founded in 2012 by two young professionals that got bored of their finance jobs, Treatings now has about 3,000 registered users around the country. Based in New York City and now open for people in other four major cities (San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, and Washington, D.C.), the company mainly aims at young professionals who are seeking career advice or collaborative opportunities.

But wait — what kind of company it is if it has no office and the only staff are the two co-founders? Instead of renting an expensive office space in Manhattan, Williams and Osetinsky became “friends of the library” of New York University and, as such, only pay “a couple hundred dollars” for a year’s access to printing machines, group discussion rooms, and Wi-Fi at the library.

To save more money, Williams and Osetinsky, who were roommates in Vanderbilt University, now share a bunk bed in their apartment in Chelsea and walk to work every day.

Things may change as the two founders are finally considering raising money from investors. For two years, the team has been cautiously focusing on testing the idea and developing the website without asking any money from investors.

Now, trying to present a larger number of users to investors, the team is reaching out to college alumni groups to promote Treatings among students and new graduates.

“Whatever has been driving the spikes so far is not a part of our long-term strategy for user growth,” said Williams. “We are waiting to see what will happen to those alumni groups.”

Unlike social network giant Facebook that is almost designed for everyone, Treatings’ targeted users are a small subset of LinkedIn users who are open-minded and feel comfortable enough to be approached by strangers. Compared with Facebook’s more than 1 billion active users and LinkedIn’s 259 million, Treatings’ user base, though yet to be developed, seems not as competitive.

That’s when the importance of user engagement comes into play. A new feature of the site, which allows users to click on the “let’s meet” button on another person’s profile, has successfully got 20 percent of the users logging back to the site and expressing interests in other people, Osetinsky said.

One of the other questions that every investor would ask is how Treatings makes money. While LinkedIn has the premium offerings model that charges a portion of its users, Treatings has no intention to do that.

The current plan is to charge companies for sponsored pages that feature all their employees on Treatings. The presumption is that companies can save the money of hiring expensive recruiters when their employees can bring in new hires they’ve met on Treating. Employees who choose to do so usually will receive a bonus from their companies.

“If you have met someone, you would be more comfortable to recommend him to someone else,” Osetinsky said.

The startup hopes to raise about $500,000 to $1 million in the next six months. The founders intend to spend part of the capital on hiring an iPhone app developer and a designer for the site.

What about the rest of the money? Two separate bedrooms and a real office just sound right for the two founders.

LinkedIn Updates Pulse, adds ‘Influencers’ and On-Site Publishing

pulse linkedin

As social networks rely more on news to drive activity, LinkedIn is working on improvements to its news-reader app, Pulse. The updates will assign content a higher in-stream ranking based on data from users’ connections, career history and seniority.

Leveraging user profiles to serve up relevant content is at the center of the company’s mobile strategy. More than 41 percent of LinkedIn’s traffic comes from smartphones and tablets and the company expects more than half of its traffic will come from mobile devices this year.

LinkedIn is also broadening its focus from information specific to a user’s profession and job searches to prioritizing content that makes LinkedIn a daily destination. It’s recently enlisted celebrities like Arianna Huffington and Martha Stewart as “influencers” who publish on the site. And all LinkedIn users will be able to publish their own content by the end of the year.

Pulse is part of LinkedIn’s strategy to capture attention on small mobile devices, with different applications serving different purposes: “The flagship LinkedIn app has a little bit of everything, but for specific use cases it’s really better to have a focused app. In a couple of seconds you need to get the value across to the user,” Ankit Gupta, co-founder of Pulse and a senior product manager at LinkedIn, told Bloomberg.

The company hopes Pulse will stand out among news-reader competitors like Flipboard, Twitter and Facebook’s Paper. Sources close to the company told Bloomberg that the new version of Pulse is set to be released in the third quarter.

Pro-Russian forces besieged Ukrainian military bases in Crimea in two separate incidents on Saturday.

In the first incident, around 200 pro-Russian protesters stormed one of the last Ukrainian-controlled military bases in western Crimea.

The unarmed group broke through the air force base in Novofedorivka, yelling "Russia! Russia!" The attack resulted in the Ukrainian soldiers leaving the base, with protesters taking down the Ukrainian flag, and putting up the Russian navy's flag, according to the AFP.

Ukrainian soldiers surrendered after barricading themselves inside, and throwing smoke bombs at protesters, as Russian officers stood outside watching, the AFP said. Most of the attackers were reportedly non-locals Read more...

Doctor At Work, Russia’s leading physicians’ community, has just secured $3 million from three major Russian venture funds, including existing investors Aurora Venture Capital and Bright Capital and new investor Guard Capital.

The deal valued the startup at $16.5 million. A part of the funds – less than one third, Bright Capital’s press service told us – went to buying out minority stakes from seed-stage investors.

With more than 200,000 registered practitioners, the site claims to serve more than 25 percent of all doctors in Russia. Its monthly audience exceeds 115,000 unique users who generate over 100,000 publications and comments each month.

The site’s turnover exceeded $1.5 million last year. Among its clients are a dozen major global pharmaceutical companies, which view the community as one of the few legal channels to promote prescription drugs.

Doctor At Work’s previous rounds of financing amounted to $300,000 in 2010, $500,000 in 2011, and $1 million in June 2012.

Since its inception in 2009, the site has won several Russian awards as well as the British Council’sInternational Young Media Entrepreneurship Award.

Announcing the KISSmetrics and AB Tasty Integration

We’re pleased to announce a new integration with a tool called AB Tasty. As the name suggests, AB Tasty is an A/B testing tool. When you run an A/B test using AB Tasty, you’ll automatically be able to send your results to KISSmetrics.

Conducting a test with AB Tasty is simple:

  1. Install the AB Tasty tag on all pages of your site.

  2. Make changes to a page using the WYSIWYG editor. (You can run a multivariate test in which you test multiple elements on a page.)

  3. Set the KPIs you want to measure.

  4. Run the test.

  5. Get your results.

Use Case

Let’s say you’re on the marketing team of a SaaS company and want to A/B test your homepage. Using AB Tasty, the first step is to install their code on all pages of your site:

Menu AB Tasty Google Chrome

After your A/B Tasty code is installed, you’ll want to run a test. In this example, let’s say you want to test your homepage headline. You would go ahead and make changes to the headline using the WYSIWYG editor:

AB-Tasty-Editor

Then you would want to select “Track Clicks” next (your KPI is “Signed Up for Free Trial”):

AB Tasty Editor Track Click

You’d run the test until you reach statistical significance. You’d also want to integrate the test into your KISSmetrics account. To do this, you would log in to AB Tasty and select “third tool integration” under the options panel:

ab test 3rd tool integration

…and integrate with KISSmetrics:

link this test to analytics tools

This integration will create a new KISSmetrics property called AB Tasty Test — 12345 (12345 is the Test ID).

Where AB Tasty Ends, KISSmetrics Begins

Your original test was set up to see if an alternate headline would lead to more trial signups. AB Tasty will determine which variation performs the best. After it completes the task, it will hand off the baton to KISSmetrics.

With KISSmetrics, you can use the AB Tasty property to create specific reports and segment your visitors. You tracked free trial signups, so a useful report would be one showing which headline variation brought in the most paying customers (not just signups).

To get more detailed than just paying customers, you can view metrics like lifetime value and revenue per user. These insights will let you know which variant brought in the most valuable customers. Again: It’s not just about which test brought the most trial signups, but also which test brought the most valuable customers.

These two founders want to get you, the normal person, cooking

These two founders want to get you, the normal person, cooking

Verena Hubertz and Mengting Gao are the founders of Kitchen Stories Cookbook, a cookbook app for iOS devices that features videos as well as photo spreads. In an interview, Gao explains the idea and business model behind Kitchen Stories.

With all the online cooking communities, recipe blogs, and apps out there, why do we need Kitchen Stories? Where did the idea come from?

Verena and I liked to cook together during our studies, but we were always disappointed by the results and user-friendliness of our recipe searches. There are a lot of food blogs with beautiful pictures, but they are more targeted towards experienced cooks. Otherwise, the cooking world is governed by advertising applications and user-generated formats that bring little value.

We wanted to take on the feel of a food blog but with a contemporary format. So, we came up with the idea of Kitchen Stories, the first video-based, user-optimized cooking app with a high-quality design. The emotional recipe videos provide cooking inspiration and are complemented by many high-resolution, step-by-step pictures and kitchen tricks. Every user can prepare a tasty dish fast and easy. We are starting with an iPad app, but we are planning to launch our iPhone version at the end of March.

What did you do before Kitchen Stories, and who is still on board?

I founded Kitchen Stories after my studies at the WHU. Before that, I went through the traditional job stations of management consulting, investment banking, and corporate, but I realized relatively early that the startup world is just more exciting. I started working in a variety of early-stage startups, and it became clear to me that I wanted to start something of my own. So, my friend and colleague Verena and I brought Kitchen Stories to life. Our team consists of an iOS developer and a designer. We also work closely with professional chefs and a design studio.

How does the business model work?

Our vision is to go from cookbook 2.0 to creating a content-based shopping platform that brings together an active community around the topic of food. We currently monetize through in-app purchases of individual recipes and recipe packets. We also have strong B2B collaborations regarding product placement, which converts into a strong additional source of revenue. On our release version of the app, we had product placements from KitchenAid, Le Creuset, and Rosenthal.

We are currently integrating tags, which create a bridge to content-based shopping. Users can then click on products for additional information and be guided to shops. In addition, we will license our free-to-access videos from the app to content platforms, which will open up another stream of revenue.

For every recipe, you need a cook, a professional film crew and, at the end, the material must be cut and edited. How valuable is this despite the high time and financial costs?

As a startup, we are able to be very flexible and produce high-quality video content at a fraction of the market price. During filming, we proceeded with the “no frills” approach and were able to do it significantly cheaper than if, let’s say, we filmed in an expensive studio. We will periodically shoot new recipes and expand the app accordingly. Our claim, however, is not to be an all-encompassing collection of recipes. Instead, we see ourselves more as a high-quality cookbook 2.0. We want to inspire a targeted group to try cooking at home.

It works, because we can easily internationalize the app. There are no spoken words in our videos, so the translation effort is very low. We are already available in English, and we are currently looking into other localization opportunities. We have an advantage over the classic print products, since we do not have any print or logistic costs, and we can scale the app easily.

How is Kitchen Stories financed?

We believed in the idea from the beginning, so we started with our own money. We got a small amount of angel funding later on but basically bootstrapped up until the launch. In addition, we sold product placement before the launch, which we were able to refinance ourselves with.

Is there something that Kitchen Stories is still missing? An employee, an investor or an office?

We are currently looking for other iOS developers and good employees in the areas of PR and marketing. We are also looking for a larger office with plenty of space for our show kitchen.

Do you have a role model?

I’ve always admired Wooga for its corporate culture. In the office, you can feel the creativity, team spirit, and passion for the product. Keeping in mind the size of the company, it is, in my opinion, a great achievement to be able to maintain this spirit.

Imagine you have won a lunch. Who from the German startup scene would you invite to eat with you?

The Runtastic founder Florian Gschwandtner because he has managed to build a strong fitness brand and sports community with mobile apps. Even if the startup comes from Austria, since the Axel Springer deal, we can’t leave it out of the German startup branch.

For what challenges do you have the most respect?

I have the most respect for the increase in operational and administrative tasks, which will be necessary for the integration of further external partners and expansion of the company. We are confident that, with a strong team, we can face the challenges ahead and bring a unique cooking experience back into the domestic kitchens of our users.
