Smartphone cameras to rival DSLRs in 12 to 18 months according to HTC

Smartphone cameras have certainly gotten better and better over the years, but the thought of rivaling DSLRs seems far away at this point in time. However, we might be closer than you think, according to HTC camera expert, Symon Whitehorn.

Whitehorn recently had an interview with Vodafone and had some very interesting things to say regarding future camera tech. One big step towards this would be the implementation of optical zoom. Manufacturers have wanted to implement this, but more refining is needed. Whitehorn thinks that we will have huge advances in phone optics in the next 12 to 18 months.

If you asked Whitehorn 2 years ago if smartphones could ever rival DSLRs, his answer would have been no, but he sees things differently now. He said, “I think there’ll always be a role for a dedicated camera, like for sports etc., but I think you’ll see the gap closing. Those cameras will become more specialised out of necessity – they can’t match the brain power that we can put into a phone.”

So what do you think? I think that optical zoom will certainly be important for the years to come, but quality is still an issue.
