The social web not only enables us to share our content from our blogs, it also enables us to attract individual audiences across a variety of specific platforms and thus diversify how we connect with our followers, and more importantly, how they connect with us.
In addition, the social web also helps bloggers convey how influential they are in their community, which can be important when a new visitor isn’t sure who you are.
This advantage comes with a price though.
In order to promote your social profile, you have to send people away from your blog … and this is what bloggers were quick to do in the early days. Some have started to think this isn’t such a smart approach after all … I mean, telling your visitors (not just your readers, but new visitors) to go away and connect somewhere else doesn’t make much sense anymore.
If you’re thinking it enables them to connect using a platform they trust, that’s true.
However, if they want to connect, you could argue they’re going to connect one way or another so why not try to control that connection a bit more instead of letting Facebook show them ads or Twitter show them promoted tweets from McDonalds?
This is where the email list comes in, but I digress.
The point here is that you might be over-promoting your social profiles on your blog and ultimately losing potential loyal readers.
