“Don’t look.”
Normally, that phrase is catnip for a journalist or any other kind of curious reader. An injunction against observation, against our freedom to view whatever information we want? Normally, that makes us wonder what the person trying to prevent us from looking has to hide.
But this is the summer of 2014, and the summer of 2014 is a whole bucket of Not Normal. There are as of Tuesday two videos from Islamic State extremists containing graphic and horrifying images of the deaths of two brave journalists, freely available to anyone who really wants to see them. But with all the curiosity in the world, I will refuse to watch them for the rest of my life; I think I can safely say that’s true for pretty much everyone I know, in the profession or outside it.
