Lollipop ‘Smart Lock’ now works with locations after Google Play Services 6.5

Yesterday, Google announced Google Play Services 6.5 with a slew of new features, but it looks like there is at least one more hidden gem. Smart Lock is a new feature in Android 5.0 Lollipop that already allows you to set certain Bluetooth devices (Trusted Devices), NFC stickers, or even your face as a way to bypass the security lock screen. So for example, if you set your Bluetooth headset as a trusted device, you won’t need to enter your security PIN if your phone is connected to it. That’s all good stuff, but Google didn’t include locations or WiFi networks with the initial launch of Lollipop. That’s changing with Play Services 6.5.

After receiving the Play Services 6.5 update, you should see an additional option called Trusted Places. As you can see in the screenshot below, you will even be able to set different locations such as work, home, or any other custom place such as a friend’s house.

You will need Google Play Services 6.5 for this new feature. It’s rolling out over the next few days, but you can grab the APK (download link below) if you’re impatient.

Smart Lock is probably my favorite new feature of Lollipop because it allows people to properly secure their devices, and at the same time, not find it a constant nuisance to enter codes all the time. For those of you that don’t have Lollipop, don’t be jealous because you can always use Delayed Lock, which I have been using for years.
