Although we all know that Google Glas has its own microphone for picking up the user’s words, that mic is severely limited by distance. Someone sitting far away can’t speak and have Google Glass pick it up. This doesn’t seem like a big problem, but for the members of the Hearing Impaired community, it means they can’t see captions for words spoken to them on Google Glass.
However, due to a new program called Captioning on Glass, if you hand your phone or any phone connected to your Glass headset to a friend, he can use the mic and voice recognition software to send messages to your screen that you can read. The app shows real promise for family and friends to more easily communicate with loved ones suffering from a hearing disorder. However, as far as strangers go, you may not want to be handing over your device to hear what they have to say.
If you own a Glass headset, go ahead and download the app to start captioning conversation now!
