Sure, Apple’s HealthKit looks pretty and may strike a chord with the masses. But in terms of design, Apple has only scratched the surface of what’s possible.
The eight concept designs below show just how beautiful health tracking systems can be. They’re not available yet — and some may never come to fruition — but they offer a sneak peek at the ways designers are reimagining how technology can make it way easier (and maybe even more fun) to be healthy.
Making it easier to live with air pollution
“The aim is to erase the ‘hospital feeling’ of wearing a mask and give tips, some basic daily learning (little challenges) of how to reduce your own impact (single and collective) on the environment.” — Designer Hélène Ly
Medy: rethinking the way doctors and patients monitor chronic disease
“I wanted to imagine something that could help people suffering from any kind of chronic disease.” — Designer Florian Pollet
Alcomath: monitoring your alcohol consumption
This app concept design by Ilya Burakov explores ways of tracking what you drink, monitoring how much money you spend, and tracking how long you’re intoxicated.
Gluco Mio: diabetes app for monitoring blood sugar
“Objective: Create a diabetes tracking app that takes the hassle out of entering in daily blood sugar levels, in addition to any other symptoms, treatments, or events.” — Designer Mai Richardson
Move!: combining fitness tracking with charity
“Move! is a ‘charity fitness’ app that converts all activities done by you into donations for charity institutions. This video shows the features that the app will have and what one can do with it.” — Designer Flávio Bezerra
U-Fit: helping parents track their kids’ health
“Working in groups of five, we came up with an iOS app called U-Fit which was designed for parents to track their children’s health and wellbeing. We incorporated a band that the child would wear which would link up to the app and show the data that it’s collecting.” — Designer Alex Poole
Healthcasts: finding deals for eating healthy
This app design concept by Jay Goggin rewards users who exercise with discounts on healthy food and products.
Deep Relax: using audio to reduce stress
Concept redesign for the app “Deep Relax” by designer Radek Skrzypczak. The design feels surprisingly spacious despite the numerous buttons, sliders, and options depicted.
