There’s a recipe to herding sheep, according to a new study focused on sheepdogs and their behaviors.
A team of UK-based researchers used GPS devices to track the movements of working sheepdogs and their flock. They found the dogs don’t just chase after their charges, the BBC reports
Instead, study co-author Andrew King said a sheepdog follows two basic rules. First it will group all of the sheep and then push the whole flock in a given direction.
“If those white fluffy things that it is looking at become too sparse with gaps between them, then he will move towards the edge and start collecting those that are starting to move away from the rest of the flock,” King told Voanews. Read more...
