Sundar Pichai responds to Tim Cook’s comments regarding Android’s security and user turnover

Steve Jobs, Tim Cook, and a ton of other people at Apple have typically never had anything nice to say about Android. That’s not to say Android’s leaders have never fired back, but Apple’s crew does not seem to do actually look at the facts. At WWDC a few weeks ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook decided to talk about Android. He rallied his crowd by bringing up Android’s security flaws and called it a “toxic hell stew.” Android and Chrome’s leader, Sundar Pichai, sat down with Businessweek to make some clarifications and issue a response.

When asked about the “toxic hell stew” comment that Cook made, Pichai explained:

“You have to be careful when you make a $100,000 Mercedes (DAI:GR) car not to look at the rest of automotive industry and make comments on it. … We serve the entire breadth of the market, globally across all form factors, et cetera. Android from the ground up is designed to be very, very secure. … History shows typically that malware is also targeted at the more popular operating system. So you know there is that.”

He then followed this by saying Google Play does a very good job ensuring safety. It detects and scans application that come from the Play Store and even outside of its own store. Pichai feels the data is “encouraging.”

Pichai was asked how he feels about Apple touting Android users shifting over to iOS devices at an accelerated pace. For Pichai and Google, that is nothing to worry about. He seen differing figures:

“Every piece of data I look at tells me that people are adopting Android at a faster pace than any other operating system. We are doing remarkably well. … They run a great show. I take it for the value of the show. … Do I worry about what they are doing? Yes. They are a great company. I think they are building a very good product and it’s vertically integrated, which helps them do certain things faster.”
