Dr. Dre painted as resolute perfectionist, compared to Steve Jobs in WSJ profile

The Wall Street Journal on Friday published an in-depth look at Beats cofounder Dr. Dre, who will be joining Apple after his company was purchased for $3 billion. He is described as a perfectionist, workaholic and someone who relies on their gut -- like late Apple cofounder Steve Jobs.

Microsoft Surface Pro 3: The Real World Road Test

Proclamations that Microsoft’s tablet-laptop hybrid, the Surface Pro 3, does not beat Apple’s popular MacBook Air grow tiresome. Since when is this a zero-sum-game? Are consumers and business people really choosing between one and the other, or is the reality somewhat more nuanced and based, as I suspect, on platform allegiances and desires?

As I noted in my original review of the first Microsoft Surface RT tablet, the device was the right tablet choice for someone who wanted a Windows tablet. On the other hand, there were significant limitations, not the least of which was the fact that the ARM CPU-based device was not running true Windows, or at least it couldn't run all Windows 7-compatible software. Canon has entered the cloud-based storage arena, albeit a bit late.

Previously marketed only in Europe as a beta program under the name Project1709, irista is the photo company's first foray into the storage universe, which has long been dominated by platforms like Google Drive and iCloud.

The platform offers users up to 10GB of free storage space. In comparison, photo-sharing site Flickr provides more than 100 times that amount with room for 1,000GB worth of photos per user, according to its website. File-saving site Dropbox comes in last with only 2GB. Read more...

Snow, Swimming and Seal-Eating: A Polar Bear's View on Life

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) on Friday released the first-ever video shot from the perspective of a polar bear on Arctic sea ice. The video, which was recorded using a video collar device, shows a bear walking on sea ice, swimming, attempting to eat a frozen seal and playing with a potential mate. (Fair warning: The seal portion of the video is quite gory)

Scientists led by Todd Atwood, who works at USGS' polar bear research program, applied video camera collars to four female polar bears on the sea ice north of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, in April. The footage provides rare insight into the bears' daily lives and activities on the ice Read more...

Finding a job is overrated. What's not overrated? Snapchat. High five, millennials

To break up the monotony of sending out résumés, recent Harvard graduate Anthony Zonfrelli used every bit of his Ivy League education to create hilarious Snaps of himself singing along to pop songs.

Even if Zonfrelli finds a job soon, he better keep Snapping. Or, if Snapchat is hiring ..

7 Reasons America Will Fail On Climate Change

I'm a climate pessimist. I don't believe the United States — or the world — will do nearly enough, nearly fast enough, to hold the rise in temperatures to safe levels. I think we're fucked. Or, at the least, I think our grandchildren are fucked.

YouTube cofounders part ways, will spin off Mixbit

YouTube cofounders part ways, will spin off Mixbit

YouTube cofounders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen are splitting up after many years of working closely together, reports TechCrunch.

The move comes after Hurley and Chen’s product incubator-focused company Avos Systems made some cuts and rearrangements to its employee roster back in February, as VentureBeat previously reported. At the time, our sources were saying that the Avos-produced streaming video service Mixbit was suffering the bulk of layoffs and would soon be shut down — a claim Hurley denied.

Today the pair announced that Avos would shift into a company focused mostly on Mixbit rather than trying to grow many different products within the company. As for Mixbit, the service focuses on letting you collaborate on creating short video clips via mobile devices that can quickly be edited and shared with friends.

Hurley will remain at Avos to lead Mixbit, but Chen will be moving on to become the latest partner at Google Ventures.

The split seems like the most logical next step based on Avos’ poor track record of services and products that failed to generate interest from consumers. For example, the company shuttered its digital magazine app Zeen back in November, and prior to that saw dismal success with a relaunched version of iconic social bookmarking service Delicious before finally selling it off to another company.

But Mixbit might be the one service out of Avos that may eventually become a hit — especially because streaming video is an area Hurley is well-versed. And now he and the rest of the Avos team have plenty of time to focus on making it better.

AVOS is a new Internet company, led by the founders of YouTube, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. AVOS recently acquired Delicious.com, the leading bookmarking service. Previously, they co-founded YouTube, the world’s largest video site in… read more »

Pianist's Classical Cover Is a Modern-Day Masterpiece

The key to a good GoPro video is, well, in D Minor.

Sure, you're probably accustomed to seeing the POV camera used for recording extreme sports (black-flipping off a canyon or ski flying in Norway). But in a recent YouTube video from ValentinaLisitsa, the camera is used to showcase one pianist's rapid finger movement in Beethoven's Sonata No. 17.

"This video just proves that playing piano is just as exciting as mountain biking, paragliding or just doing silly stuff with GoPro camera as a companion," the video's description reads.

Now that deserves a standing ovation. Read more...

Vodafone has released a transparency report that details how 29 governments around the world snoop on its customers' data, with an unprecedented amount of detail over 88-pages and more than 40,000 words. But there's one thing that the report doesn't mention: Vodafone's alleged collaboration with the British spy agency, the GCHQ.

Last summer, one of the first articles based on documents leaked by Edward Snowden revealed that the GCHQ, the NSA's sister agency, has direct access to transatlantic fiber optic cables thanks to secret agreement with a series of companies defined as "intercept partners." Read more...

The Central Intelligence Agency just joined Twitter and Facebook, and, naturally, people reacted in all kinds of ways to the agency's first tweet.

We'd make fun of the CIA for being so behind the times, but something tells us that officials and other government intelligence agents (*cough* NSA *cough*) know more about the Twittersphere than they let on.

Here's that tweet, which has already been retweeted more than 61,000 times and favorited around 30,000

We can neither confirm nor deny that this is our first tweet.
