The news people consume on a daily basis usually consists of whatever is blasted out on social media by friends. But it’s not always easy to find the most important news of the day.

That is a problem Yahoo is attempting to solve with its News Digest app, which today launches on the iPad. Yahoo News Digest, which launched back in January from the team that brought you Summly, picks a small collection of the most important news articles of the day to present daily, thus giving you at least all the talking points you’d need to participate in current events.

The iPad version, which will be available later today, will also kick off a new exclusive weekly video from former ABC news anchor and Yahoo correspondent Katie Couric. Couric will do a two-minute segment offering some explanation and context for the news of the week. Couric’s segment will debut every week on Sunday, and should compliment the app’s mission of giving you “episodic” news that you can actually finish. Additionally, the iPad version brings the ability to dig deeper into specific news sections like technology and entertainment.

Initially I enjoyed using Yahoo News Digest, but over time felt like I was just reading stale news on topics I wasn’t really that into. With the ability to parse through sections for more articles, that could change, but I don’t really see myself getting very excited to watch Couric re-explain the week’s worth of news.
