Earlier this week news surfaced that Samsung had filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for “Samsung Gear VR.” It turns out that was not the only trademark application Samsung submitted related to their new Gear branded line of wearable devices. They also filed for protection on the trademark “SAMSUNG GEAR STORE” earlier this week.
According to the description, the mark will be applied to application software for a wide variety of wearable devices. The software will be used “in searching, reviewing, purchasing, and downloading electronic games and software applications” along with a litany of computer hardware devices. Notably, the list includes “smartphones in the shape of a watch,” “mobile devices in the shape of watchband” and the more generic “wearable computer peripherals.” This suggests Samsung plans to not only sell apps for their wearable devices via a new Gear Store, but will also sell the actually devices through this new store.
There have been some suggestions that this new store will be an avenue for Samsung to distribute Tizen based apps and hardware since they already have a Samsung app store for their Android powered devices. However, it could be they plan to put more focus on their own distribution channels, even for Android based devices and apps, instead of relying on the existing store or Google Play.
