We are all used to saving our digital content on our desktops, our phones, or even in the cloud, but wouldn’t it be cool to also drop content based on specific GPS locations? That is exactly what Capsules.io is. Created by the very well know Android developer, Wug Fresh, these capsules are virtual containers that can be “placed” anywhere you want and hold any type of files you wish. These include pictures, messages, videos, music, or even websites. You can even restrict access to certain people or make it password protected.
Think of the possibilities as companies can you use them for marketing. How about leaving a love note to your significant other along with their favorite songs. Geocacher fans can even incorporate these capsules for extra clues in scavenger hunts. Imagine visiting a major landmark and opening a capsule to find out more key information about the spot or maybe watch a video that happened years ago. These are true bookmarks for the physical world.
Using an Android app, you will be able to create your own capsules as well as see others. Your personal capsules will be classified as carrying, dropped, or starred. You can even create a customized avatar for each capsule. You can restrict each capsule in so many ways from passwords, to who can see them, to setting them to appear only when the sun is out or at a specific time.
The WugFresh team has spent the last year creating the web service along with a prototype of the Android app. To take it to the next level, they created a Kickstarter project to help achieve the funds necessary for storage costs, additional Android developers, and to bring the service to other platforms. You can back the project for as little as a dollar, but just like any other KickStarter project, they offer early access and other goodies for higher amounts.
