Amy Poehler Outtakes Are Marketing Gold for Old Navy

TV might be in a death spiral, but film is not dead. That was the statement from Old Navy’s global CMO Ivan Wicksteed during his presentation on expanding the retailer’s marketing through digital content at Ad Age’s Digital Conference San Francisco. Mr. Wicksteed talked at length about how content works for Old Navy, and how he thinks content and programmatic will intersect in the future.

For the retailer’s recent campaigns, including one featuring comedian Amy Poehler, content has played a central role in its marketing and is being sought out by consumers far more than traditional advertising. Some of the content working best for Old Navy are outtakes from Ms. Poehler’s TV-commercial shoots. After his presentation, Mr. Wicksteed expanded on why Old Navy’s content with Ms. Poehler is resonating better than the TV spots she appears in.

Here Come the Men of Pinterest

Pinterest’s first explosive growth was fueled by women, as suggested by early reports from women’s magazines that their sites were suddenly getting more traffic from Pinterest than from Facebook.

But don’t discount the growing group of men on the social pinboard, said Don Faul, head of operations at Pinterest, during an appearance at Ad Age’s Digital Conference in San Francisco.

See more video from the conference right here, with Old Navy Global CMO Ivan Wicksteed talking about the value of outtakes from its TV campaign with Amy Poehler.

Best of 2013: Responsive design, content marketing, conversion paths & more

attachment-52b87d90e4b0e28da6ea1ab7

2013. Google called it “a year of transformation.” Mashable declared it “the year of responsive web design.” And then there was Google Enhanced Campaigns, which was mandated across all AdWords campaigns back in July. If you weren’t ready for mobile, well, it didn’t matter, because it happened.

With smartphone sales expected to reach 1.81 billion…and double by 2015…compelling, intelligent, and integrated digital campaigns, and thus experiences, will be mandatory.

Not optional.

We’ve been preaching brilliant post-click marketing since 2007. But this year, highly relevant, smart, user-centered creative really took a front seat that will carry through 2014 and beyond.

So, to wrap up the year with a nice bow, we wanted to share our “Best of 2013″ — a collection of blog posts designed to inspire better digital experiences and help you provide more value (and conversions) in the new year.

Cheers!

The worst thing about autumn is, of course, that Nelly’s “Hot in Here” no longer applies to your life.

So Australian pop-punkers 5 Seconds of Summer stopped by The Tonight Show on Thursday to help us out. They performed rewritten lyrics to popular songs that fans had tweeted to Jimmy Fallon, giving Blink-182, Jay-Z and System of a Down a pumpkin-infused makeover.

Mobile Marketing: The Week in Review

Mobile Marketing The Week in Review Mobile Marketing: The Week in Review

In case you missed it, here are some of the top stories in mobile marketing and advertising we’ve been following this week.

On Tuesday, The Mobile Marketing Association (MMA), kicked off its SM2 Innovation Summit with the release of a new report titled “How Big is the Mobile Marketing Opportunity.”

Could multiple beacon messages be a turn-off for consumers? It certainly appears so. Newly released research indicates that marketers risk a whopping 313 percent drop in application use when more than one beacon message is delivered per location.

In a recent thought-provoking piece in Forbes, contributor Daniel Newman intelligently explained why B2B marketers must begin to embrace the growing trend that is mobile marketing. As we near the last few months of 2014, if mobile Internet usage trends stay on the same track, this will be the year that mobile usage surpasses desktop once and for all.

Personalization is increasingly critical in the quest to reach consumers with appropriate messages across a multitude of platforms. But it’s still a struggle to accomplish it.

These days, cross-platform marketing is playing a larger role in the success of campaigns for businesses both large and small. This includes marketing campaigns designed to deliver a cohesive or complementary message across online, mobile, radio, print, and TV materials.

google glass

Although we all know that Google Glas has its own microphone for picking up the user’s words, that mic is severely limited by distance. Someone sitting far away can’t speak and have Google Glass pick it up. This doesn’t seem like a big problem, but for the members of the Hearing Impaired community, it means they can’t see captions for words spoken to them on Google Glass.

However, due to a new program called Captioning on Glass, if you hand your phone or any phone connected to your Glass headset to a friend, he can use the mic and voice recognition software to send messages to your screen that you can read. The app shows real promise for family and friends to more easily communicate with loved ones suffering from a hearing disorder. However, as far as strangers go, you may not want to be handing over your device to hear what they have to say.

If you own a Glass headset, go ahead and download the app to start captioning conversation now!

Microsoft sues Samsung for $6.9 Million

samsung-ativ-se1-610x416

Due to a few patents Microsoft owns in relation to Samsung’s Android Phones, Samsung owes Microsoft a certain amount of money each device sold. Recently, however, Samsung hasn’t been playing fair ball. The Korean company hasn’t paid its dues since 2012, and Microsoft thinks it’s time to pay up, hence the lawsuit. The lawsuit is over the interest owed by Samsung.

If anything, it seems this court is deciding the answer to this altercation and giving one company some bragging rights: this win will be a symbolic one for Microsoft, whose patents cover about 80% of Android phones, not a large financial one. Source: Engadget
