The Qi wireless charging standard is one of the most popular wireless charging solutions, but it still has limitations. Since it solely uses inductive charging, your device has to sit on a charging pad to work. That removes the hassle of plugging in a USB cable, but you’re not exactly going to be using your phone if it’s glued to a power mat. Fortunately, it looks like the Wireless Power Consortium is going to be adopting a new technology into the Qi standard that will allow devices to charge at a slightly longer distance.
The new technology is called resonance charging, and it allows the device and the charger to be nearly two inches apart. That’s not a massive range, but it will allow you to easily pick up a device and respond to a quick text without interrupting your device’s power supply. Plus, this new technology will allow Qi mats to charge multiple devices, so long as they’re in range, and the chargers will supposedly be able to output about 2,000 watts of power.
What’s even better about this new technology is that it will be backwards compatible with current Qi products, so you won’t need to worry about upgrading your smartphone just to take advantage of the extra convenience. You should see these new chargers hit the market later this year.
