California Chrome made a valiant run at the Belmont Stakes on Saturday but came up short of what would’ve been the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed did it 36 years ago.
The presumed winner was the 11 horse, Tonalist. California Chrome finished fourth after a late charge that ran out of steam. Chrome started clean and glided over to the rail to start the race, but traffic built around his right flank early.
