More information has surfaced about The Samsung Gear VR today, specifically related to its mechanism for controlling basic functions of the VR. The Gear VR Manager, an app downloaded to your Samsung mobile device, works hand-in-hand with other Samsung apps made for the VR, like VR Panorama and VR Cinema. Some features of the VR manager include VR Lock, which sets up a security lock whilst wearing the headset, and a Warning Alert that gives the user an alert every hour reminding him that he’s in a virtual world.
In addition to the latest information about software aspects, there are also some revelations about hardware. The headset purportedly sports a back button and touchpad for navigation, since your mobile device will be rendered useless once connected to the Gear VR. The back button also is used as a see-through button, allowing the user to see the real world around him after long-pressing the button. Simply spouting “Hi Galaxy!” will open up the S Voice app, which can launch other applications.
When the VR is launched at IFA 2014, the SDK will be available for developers to work their magic and make this tech shine. Hopefully the Gear VR will be just the thing that brings virtual reality to the mainstream and gain the widespread success we’ve been waiting for during the past few decades.
What do you think about the Gear VR? Will it offer the push VR Tech needs to become mainstream? Leave your ideas in the comment section below.
