Postmates ups its insurance policy and hits 20,000 deliveries per week

Postmates ups its insurance policy and hits 20,000 deliveries per week

On-demand delivery startup Postmates today launched a new policy that insures couriers up to $50,000 in the event of an on-the-job accident — a policy which Postmates claims is “unmatched by any competitor.”

Numerous  “gig economy” companies have bulked up on insurance coverage lately, including TaskRabbit, Lyft, and Uber. For Postmates, the new plan will immediately cover all of its 4,000 couriers during every delivery. Postmates claims its couriers handle 20,000 deliveries per week in 10 cities.

Postmates chief Bastian Lehmann tells VentureBeat that “no incident that triggered” the new policy. However, the new coverage may satisfy the complaints of some disgruntled Postmates contractors.

In addition to the change above, Postmates also announced today that its couriers will also receive “free membership” to OneMedical.

Postmates has raised $22 million in funding since it launched in 2012.
