Without Scotland, Will the UK Lose Its Cool?

At every checkpoint in eastern Ukraine rebels in teeshirts and combats, khaki bandanas around their heads, kalashnikovs slung across their shoulders, demanded to see our documents


“Scottish television!” we would cry as we showed our British passports.



It wasn’t entirely true — well, Channel 4 News does broadcast in Scotland as it does everywhere else in the UK — but it was a surefire way of currying favor with the separatists. To them, a newly independent Scotland would be a brother country to the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic, putative independent states amputated from Ukraine and set up with the backing of Russia.
