How could a government banning Twitter not be one of the biggest topics on Twitter? Yesterday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke out about eradicating Twitter in Turkey. While there is a ban, it is definitely not stopping anyone from Tweeting. According to We Are Social and Brandwatch, the country is Tweeting up to 138% more. In fact, even here at HootSuite we’ve been getting triple the amount of traffic from Turkey in the past 24 hours.
Before the ban, Twitterers were discussing the corruption of the Turkish government. Of course, Erdogan was not happy to hear this, and wanted to make sure the network was shut down before next week’s local elections.
Turkish Twitterers, still able to use social networks through SMS and tools like HootSuite, have been responding by sending some hilarious messages mocking the Prime Minister’s attempts to of censorship. We’ve been seeing an endless stream of memes, mock art and other jokes coming through our feeds.
We’ve found a few of the best ones and compiled them here.
