Countering the stereotype of the web-surfing couch potato, a new study reveals that logging online may actually help people maintain their weight loss

Researchers from the University of Kansas Medical Center compared results from 20 overweight and obese individuals who embarked on a nine-month weight-loss program. The first three months focused on weight loss, followed by six months of weight maintenance. Participants were randomly divided into two groups:

  • Those who attended weekly in-person clinics for weight-loss consultation, and then received weight-maintenance consultation via Second Life, a virtual-reality community.

  • Those who received both weight-loss and -maintenance consultation on Second Life. Read more…

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg Joins the $1 Salary Club

Facebook-graph-search
Feed-twFeed-fb

Facebook confirmed in a filing that Mark Zuckerberg, the social network's founder and CEO, is taking a $1 salary this year, and foregoing any bonuses.

But he's not exactly taking a vow of poverty. When Facebook went public last year, Zuckerberg exercised 60 million stock options, then worth nearly $2.3 billion, buying those shares for next to nothing. (He sold half of the stock to cover his tax bill.) And he's still sitting on another 60 million stock options that can be exercised on Nov. 7, 2015, for the same dirt-cheap price of $0.06.

All of those shares give Zuckerberg plenty of incentive to keep Facebook in good financial health, although he is on record saying, "We don't wake up in the morning with the primary goal of making money," and isn't really beholden to shareholders, since he controls a majority of proxy votes. Are Negative Twitter Messages Contagious?

Negative-twitter-messages

Feed-twFeed-fb

Does a negative post on Twitter have infectious germs powerful enough to influence the behavior of tweeters? Maybe. Then again, maybe not.

A new report from the American Council on Science and Health claims negative Twitter messages are contagious. In this case, researchers at Penn State University collected tweets with vaccination-related keywords during the 2009 H1N1 scare, determining negative tweets about children’s vaccines are more likely to be spread than positive ones. Scientists tracked those tweets, then ran results through an algorithm categorizing the messages as positive, negative or neutral. Social media influence was also part of the formula, with number following and sentiment analyzed. The researchers studied a total of 318,379 tweets expressing positive, negative or neutral sentiments about H1N1, the so-called swine flu. Read more…
