According to the latest data from Kantar Worldpanel Comtech, Android had a good first quarter. According to the data Android gained 8.3 percent over the previous year, holding nearly 57.6 percent of the smartphone market share in the US. As far as iOS is concerned, its marketshare dropped by 7.8 percent to 35.9 percent. Windows Phone is in third with 5.3 percent.
In Europe, Android is still on top of the charts with 70.7 percent and Apple holds the second place spot with 19.2 percent. Windows Phone again holds third with 8.1 percent of the marketshare. iOS made some gains in Europe. Dominic Sunnebo, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, had this to say:
“Apple regained ground in the first quarter of 2014, primarily due to the strong performance of the iPhone 5S, growing its sales share in Europe, Japan and Australia. By contrast, Windows had a tough start to the year as a result of its entry-level Nokia models facing fierce competition from low-end Motorola, LG and Samsung Android smartphones.”
Apple is doing quite well in Japan as well with securing 42 percent of sales on NTT DoCoMo, 59 percent on KDDI AU, and 81 percent on Softbank. In China, Phablets have been taking off in popularity as phones with screens that are 5-inches or higher make up about 40 percent of the marketshare in the country. As rumors circulate that Apple is developing a device with a bigger screen, it will be interesting see how these numbers are next year. That being said, it looks like Android is continuing its domination of the market.
